Emmy Morta
Emmy Morta is a multidisciplinary visual artist working primarily with painting and experimental media. Combining detailed representational aspects with the vagueness of abstract marks, she emulates our connection and disconnection with the plant world. Human figures are intertwined with plant life. After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Emmy left the United States, where she grew up, and relocated to Shanghai, then Cape Town, where she currently lives and works.
My current practice mainly consists of a body of work titled Seeweeds examining the relationship between overlooked plant life and humans' oblivious dependance. Using a variety of seaweed to visualise the often overlooked life that we disregard while simultaneously take comfort in. Do we even really look at the nature that we rely on so heavily for the stability of our own mental state? This work is about actually seeing. Looking closer to rediscover wonderment.
